Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - Viaggio in Italia - Italian Journey
In 1907 the Literary Agent Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did a long honeymoon in Europe
with his second wife, Jean Leckie. During his travels he took many pictures with his pocket camera
and the couple collected postcards and mementos of the places they visited. These souvenirs were
collected in two photo albums which were auctioned at Christie's in 2004. The albums were bought by
an American collector, Richard Sveum, who very kindly made the scans of the pictures available to
the scholars of Uno Studio in Holmes.
This book is a painstaking reconstruction, as detailed as possible, of the Italian segment of ACD's
travel, based on the photographs from the albums. In 156 pages full of color pictures, the Italian
Holmesian scholars analyze the stages of the journey. Ivo Lombardo (Venice), Stefano Guerra (Rome),
Enrico Solito (Florence) and Philip Weller (Naples) provide a mass of details and historical data
of great importance to all Doylean scholars, but of course there are also many references to Sherlock
Holmes.
The editors are Roberto Vianello, Enrico Solito and Gianluca Salvatori. The text is bilingual
(Italian/English).
